Higher Education News

Forbes – June 20, 2024
The Congressional Budget Office (CBO) has updated its of how much the federal student loan program will cost taxpayers, and the numbers aren’t pretty. The latest official estimates show that taxpayers will spend $393 billion on the federal student loan program between 2024 and 2034, or around $3,100 per household. CBO estimated there will be about 490,000 fewer students who will receive Pell Grants in FY24, compared to CBO’s FY24 estimate from their May 2023 baseline. If Congress continues providing the same discretionary Pell Grant appropriations every year, the Pell Grant reserve will now run out in FY28.
